Kenyan Activists Released Amid Political Tensions

Two Kenyan political activists, Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, were recently released from detention in Uganda and handed over to the Kenyan Ambassador after being held for over a month in a military facility. Their arrest on October 1st followed their attendance at a rally organised by Uganda's main opposition leader, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, sparking intense diplomatic pressure between Nairobi and Kampala. The Ugandan government initially denied holding the two men, who later claimed they were detained under "inhumane conditions."

The situation was finally resolved after President Yoweri Museveni personally confirmed their arrest, publicly accusing the activists of working with the opposition's National Unity Platform (NUP) to incite riots and unrest in Uganda. While releasing them to prevent further diplomatic strain, Museveni issued a stern warning against foreign interference in Ugandan politics, emphasising that any attempts to mobilise protests or mislead the youth would be met with swift and firm arrests. This event underscores the persistent political volatility and sensitivity around opposition activities in the lead-up to the 2026 general elections.
