The African Union (AU) has officially recognised and honoured the contributions of the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) Battle Group XLI for their dedicated service under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). The Ugandan contingent was lauded for its professionalism, sacrifice, and commitment to the mission's mandate, which involves degrading Al-Shabaab and facilitating the transfer of security responsibilities to the Somali National Army (SNA). This honour reinforces Uganda's reputation as a key security contributor to regional stability.
This commendation serves as a morale booster for the UPDF, which has consistently played a crucial and often perilous role in Somalia for over a decade. The recognition from the AU is important not only diplomatically but also in confirming the effectiveness of Ugandan troops in fulfilling a complex and high-risk peacekeeping mission, which is vital for the eventual stability and sovereignty of the Horn of Africa nation.
